FAQs
What are the downsides to manual transmissions?
Of course, manual transmissions aren’t perfect. One of the main drawbacks is that they can be more challenging to drive than automatics, especially if you’re not used to them. Shifting gears takes some practice, and it’s easy to make a mistake when you’re first starting out. This can be frustrating for both you and your passengers.

Another downside to manual transmissions is that they’re not as widely available as automatics. If you’re renting a car or borrowing a friend’s, there’s a good chance it will be automatic. This means you may not have the opportunity to practice stick shift driving as much as you’d like.

Finally, while manual transmissions are typically cheaper to buy and maintain, there is something that automatic drivers don’t need to worry about: the clutch. The clutch is a critical component of manual transmissions, and if it goes bad, you won’t be able to drive your car at all. This can be a costly repair, so it’s something to keep in mind if you’re considering making the switch to manual.
