The most common learners permit is the Class D – Operator permit. This permit is valid for learning to drive an automobile. There are also motorcycle permits, commercial learners permit (CLP), and Class E permits which are for Taxi and Livery driving.

When you apply at the DMV to take your permit test, you will need to provide proof of age, identification and residence. Birth certificate, passport, social security card and NYS ID are some of the documents they will accept.
First you will apply and pay for your permit test. You will than take the written test. If you do not pass you may take it again at no additional cost.
It’s time to prepare for you road test! Some of the thing you will need are supervised driving practices, a pre-licensing course or a drivers ed course before you take the road test. You must follow all learners permit restrictions. If you are under the age of 18, you must wait at least 6 months from the date you received your learners permit to schedule your road test.
