Driving lessons are professional classes that help you learn how to operate a vehicle and become a safer driver. Depending on your location, you may be required to take certain driving lessons to get a driver’s license. In New York, for example, depending on the type of vehicle you wish to drive, you must complete a certain number of hours of professional driving instruction.
With all its hills and narrow streets, driving in New York City can be a daunting task. Between the busy streets and aggressive drivers, it is critical to have the proper driving skills to survive. That’s why it’s vital to take professional driving lessons from a certified instructor. While some classes are a must to obtain a driver’s license, others are highly recommended to build up your skills and confidence to drive in the Big Apple.
If you’re looking for driving lessons in NYC, our certified instructors at Ferrari Driving School (FDS) can help. We offer a range of classes that meet DMV’s requirements, as well as teen driver training to give your child the skills they need to stay safe on the roads. With convenient locations in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Long Island, we make it easy for you to get the driving lessons you need.
Permit Practice Test
The first step to getting your driver’s license is to pass the permit test. This can be a daunting task, but with a little bit of studying, you’ll be able to pass it with ease. The best way to prepare for the written exam is by taking a practice test. This will give you an idea of what type of questions are asked and how to answer them correctly.
The New York DMV’s test covers all kinds of topics from road signs to speed limits, from right-of-way laws to parking. FDS offers permit practice tests to help you study for the real thing. This is a great way to familiarize yourself with the material, ensuring that you’re fully prepared for the exam.
Even if you are an experienced driver from another country, you will still need to take the written permit test to get a New York driver’s license. Our practice tests are a great way to brush up on your knowledge of U.S. traffic laws, which may differ from those in your home country.
The best thing about our permit practice tests is that they are free. You can take as many tests as you like online using your smartphone or computer. This is a great way to study at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home.
The Five-Hour Class
To take your road test, you’ll need to complete a five-hour class, which used to be done in person but is now offered online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This course, also known as the Pre-licensing course, is a DMV-designed class that covers various topics, such as road safety, basic vehicle operation, and New York State traffic laws.
FDS offers an online class via Zoom that meets the requirements of the New York DMV. The class is only $55, and we provide additional discounts to those who take our behind-the-wheel instruction. It’s free for anyone taking more than 21 hours of driving lessons with us.
Our certified instructors will guide you through the material and answer any questions you may have. Once you’ve completed the class, we will directly send your certificate of completion to the DMV.
Our certificates are valid for one year. Make sure to get started on your driver’s education as soon as possible, so you can be ready to take your road test when the time comes.
Stick Shift Lessons
If you plan on driving a manual transmission car, you’ll need to take stick shift lessons. While it may be tempting to learn from a friend or family member, it’s best to let a professional handle this one. Stick shift driving is far different from automatic and requires more precision and skill. It also takes a bit more time to master.
FDS, which has served New York Cityβs five boroughs for more than half a century, offers private stick shift driving lessons starting at an affordable price. Check out our price chart below to see the different package options we offer. Our certified instructors will help you learn how to properly operate the clutch and shift gears so that you can drive stick with confidence.
What makes FDS different from other driving schools is that all our instructors are well-versed in defensive driving techniques. This is vital in a city like New York, where aggressive driving is all too common. With our stick shift driving lessons, you’ll have the skills and confidence to handle any situation that arises while driving in NYC.
Teen Driver Training
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a driver’s license in New York State. If you’re under 18, you must also complete a 48-hour driver’s education course, which is offered at a number of DMV-approved high schools.
The course has a classroom component of 24 hours and an automobile component of 24 hours. You will only drive for six hours. For the rest, you will be observing a licensed driver.
Furthermore, DMV requires all teens younger than 18 to complete a 50-hour supervised driving period. The supervisor can be a parent, guardian, or driving instructor over 21 years old. Out of the 50 hours, at least 15 must be done at night and 10 during moderate-to-heavy traffic.
Since under-18 teens must wait for at least six months after completing driver’s education to take the road test, it is best to start your training as soon as possible.
